Your First Two Weeks — Induction Programme
Every new carer at SW Care begins with a two-week paid induction. This is not a quick online module and a handshake. It is a thorough, structured programme designed to give you real skills and genuine confidence before your first solo visit.
Week one: Classroom learning. You will cover the essential knowledge every carer needs — safeguarding, infection control, health and safety, communication skills, and an introduction to person-centred care planning. Sessions are interactive, practical, and delivered by experienced trainers who have worked in care themselves.
Week two: Shadowing. You will accompany experienced carers on their client visits, observing how they work, asking questions, and gradually taking on tasks under supervision. By the end of the second week, you will have seen a wide range of client situations and care needs.
Both weeks are fully paid. You will never be asked to train in your own time or at your own expense.
> “The two-week induction was brilliant. I was really nervous because I had never done care work before, but by the end I felt properly prepared. The shadowing especially was invaluable — seeing how experienced carers handle different situations gave me so much confidence.” — Laura, Care Assistant, Cheltenham
The Care Certificate
The Care Certificate is a nationally recognised set of 15 standards that every new care worker in England is expected to complete. At SW Care, you will work through Care Certificate standards during your first 12 weeks, supported by your manager and our Flourish training platform.
The Care Certificate standards cover:
- Understand your role
- Your personal development
- Duty of care
- Equality and diversity
- Work in a person-centred way
- Communication
- Privacy and dignity
- Fluids and nutrition
- Awareness of mental health, dementia, and learning disabilities
- Safeguarding adults
- Safeguarding children
- Basic life support
- Health and safety
- Handling information
- Infection prevention and control
Each standard combines online learning through our Flourish platform with practical assessments and observations during your client visits. Your manager will sign off each standard as you demonstrate competence in real-world settings.
The Care Certificate is not just a tick-box exercise. It builds a solid foundation of knowledge and skills that everything else is built on. Many carers tell us they found it genuinely useful, not just something to get through.
> “I thought the Care Certificate would be boring classroom stuff. It was actually really practical — I learned things I use every single day with my clients.” — Jordan, Care Assistant, GL52
Ongoing Training and Development
Beyond the Care Certificate, we provide additional ongoing training and development to ensure our carers can handle the full range of situations they will encounter. These modules are delivered through a combination of classroom sessions, e-learning, and practical assessments.
Dementia Care Training
Dementia is one of the most common conditions our carers support. We provide Dementia Friends training in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society, giving you a solid understanding of different types of dementia, how they affect people, and practical strategies for providing effective, compassionate support.
This is not a brief overview. You will learn about communication techniques, managing challenging situations, creating calm environments, and supporting families who are living with a dementia diagnosis.
Moving and Handling
Safe moving and handling protects both you and your clients. This practical training covers how to assist with mobility safely, use equipment like hoists and slide sheets, and recognise when a task is beyond safe manual handling.
You will practise techniques in a controlled setting before applying them in client homes. Refresher training is provided regularly to keep your skills up to date.
Medication Administration
Many clients need support with their medication. Our medication administration training covers the principles of safe medication management, common medication types, record keeping, and what to do if something goes wrong.
You will learn the practical skills needed to support clients with their prescribed medication safely and confidently. Clear care plans and 24/7 management support mean you always have guidance when you need it.
First Aid
Every SW Care carer receives first aid training. You will learn how to respond to common emergencies — choking, falls, cardiac events, and allergic reactions — with practical, hands-on exercises that prepare you for real situations.
First aid certification is renewed regularly to ensure your skills stay current.
NVQ Levels 2 and 3 — Funded Qualifications
Once you have settled into your role, we offer the opportunity to study for nationally recognised NVQ qualifications — available through government-funded programmes.
NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care is typically the first qualification our carers work towards. It covers the core competencies of care work and is assessed through a combination of observation, reflection, and written evidence gathered during your everyday work. You do not need to attend college — the qualification is earned on the job.
NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care is for carers who want to progress into senior, supervisory, or specialist roles. It builds on Level 2 with more advanced modules covering leadership, care planning, and supporting complex needs.
Both qualifications are fully funded. You study while you work, with support from a dedicated assessor who visits you regularly.
These are real qualifications. They are recognised across the entire care sector and will serve your career wherever it takes you. Whether you stay with SW Care for years or eventually move on, these qualifications travel with you.
> “Getting my NVQ Level 2 while working was one of the best things I have done. I did not have to go to college or pay a penny. My assessor came to me, and I built my portfolio from my actual work. Now I am halfway through my Level 3.” — Priya, Senior Carer, Cheltenham
Continuous Professional Development
Training at SW Care does not stop after your induction and qualifications. We are committed to continuous professional development (CPD) because care standards evolve, and our team needs to evolve with them.
Ongoing development includes:
- Regular refresher training — moving and handling, medication, safeguarding, and infection control are updated annually
- Specialist modules — as your career develops, you can access training in areas like end-of-life care, stoma care, PEG feeding, and mental health support
- Team training days — whole-team sessions covering new practices, CQC updates, and shared learning from real cases
- Online learning via Flourish — a library of modules you can access at any time, on any device
- Supervisions and appraisals — regular one-to-one meetings with your manager to review your development and set goals
- Peer learning — shadowing colleagues, sharing best practice, and learning from each other’s experiences
We also encourage carers who want to explore leadership. If you are interested in becoming a team leader, supervisor, or care coordinator, we will support your development and create opportunities for you to grow.
> “Even after four years, I am still learning new things. SW Care sends me on courses, gives me access to online training, and my supervisor always asks what I want to learn next. They take development seriously.” — Marcus, Senior Carer, GL51
