What a Live-In Carer Role Involves

A live-in carer lives in the client’s home, typically on a rota of two weeks on and two weeks off (though other patterns are available). You provide personalised support throughout the day while having your own private room and dedicated time off each day.

This is not 24-hour, non-stop work. You will have a structured daily routine with built-in breaks and a reasonable number of sleeping hours. Our care plans are thorough and realistic, designed to support both the client and you.

Live-in care jobs in Gloucestershire are ideal for people who enjoy continuity, building relationships, and providing genuinely holistic support. You are not rushing between visits — you are fully present for one person.

> “I was doing visiting care and felt rushed all the time. With live-in care, I can actually give someone my full attention. The relationship I have with my client is wonderful.” — Helen, Live-In Carer, Cheltenham

A Day in the Life of a Live-In Carer

Every day varies depending on the client’s needs, preferences, and care plan. Here is what a typical day might look like.

Morning Routine

Your day usually starts around 7:00 or 8:00 AM. You will help your client get up, wash, and dress at their own pace. There is no rush — this is their home and their routine.

You will prepare breakfast, administer morning medication, and help with any personal care tasks. Some clients like to read the paper over tea. Others prefer to get straight into their day. You will quickly learn what works best.

Daytime Activities and Support

During the day, you will support your client with a range of activities. That might include preparing lunch, accompanying them on a walk around the local Cheltenham area, helping with light housekeeping, or driving them to a GP appointment.

You will also have your own break time during the day — typically two hours when you can relax in your private room, go for a walk, or run personal errands.

Companionship is a huge part of live-in care. You might play cards, watch a favourite television programme together, tend to the garden, or simply have a good conversation. These moments are what make live-in care so meaningful.

Evening and Overnight

Evenings usually involve preparing dinner, helping with the evening routine, medication, and getting your client settled for the night. Once they are in bed, your time is your own.

Overnight, you are available if needed — for example, if your client needs help getting to the bathroom. Most nights are uninterrupted, but you are there for reassurance and safety. If overnight needs are frequent, we adjust the care plan and staffing accordingly.

Live-In Carer Pay and Accommodation

We pay our live-in carers the Real Living Wage. On top of that, your accommodation and utilities are included at no cost during your placement. This means your take-home pay goes significantly further than you might expect.

Your live-in carer package includes:

  • Real Living Wage — properly paid for every working day
  • Free accommodation — your own private room in the client’s home
  • Utilities included — no bills to worry about during placements
  • Paid holiday — 28 days pro rata, including bank holidays
  • Workplace pension scheme
  • DBS check fully funded — no cost to you
  • Mileage reimbursement — if you use your car for client activities
  • Blue Light Card eligibility — thousands of discounts

Rota patterns. The standard pattern is two weeks on, two weeks off, but we work with you to find an arrangement that suits your life. Some carers prefer three weeks on and one week off. Others split their time between two clients. We are flexible.

> “The accommodation is always comfortable and clean. I have my own room, my own space, and I save a fortune because I am not paying rent or bills during my placements. The money goes much further.” — David, Live-In Carer, GL52

Training for Live-In Carers

You do not need live-in care experience to apply. We provide comprehensive, fully paid training that covers everything specific to the live-in role, on top of our standard induction programme.

Your training includes:

  • Full paid induction — two weeks of classroom and shadow training
  • The Care Certificate — 15 nationally recognised standards
  • Live-in specific modules — boundaries, lone working, maintaining professionalism in a home setting
  • Dementia Friends training — many live-in clients have dementia-related conditions
  • Moving and handling certification
  • Medication administration training
  • First aid qualification
  • NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 — fully funded qualifications you can earn while working

We also provide ongoing support throughout every placement. You will have a named manager, regular check-ins, and access to our 24/7 on-call team. You are never on your own.

> “I had never done live-in care before joining SW Care. The training covered everything — not just the care skills, but how to manage boundaries, look after yourself, and handle tricky situations. I felt completely prepared.” — Lisa, Live-In Carer, Cheltenham

Who Makes a Great Live-In Carer

Live-in care is not for everyone, and that is entirely fine. The best live-in carers tend to share certain qualities.

You might be a great fit if you are:

  • Patient and adaptable — you are happy to work at someone else’s pace and adjust to their routines
  • Self-motivated — you can manage your time and tasks independently
  • Emotionally resilient — you can handle the challenges that come with caring for someone closely
  • Warm and personable — you enjoy building real relationships and being part of someone’s daily life
  • Comfortable with your own company — you are content during quieter periods
  • Respectful of boundaries — you understand the importance of maintaining professionalism while living in someone’s home

No experience or qualifications required. Many of our best live-in carers came from completely different backgrounds — hospitality, teaching, parenting, or the armed forces. What matters is your character, your compassion, and your commitment.

Live-in care suits a variety of life situations. It works well for people between permanent homes, those who enjoy travel and variety, career changers looking for something meaningful, and anyone who wants to reduce their living costs while doing genuinely rewarding work.

How We Match You With the Right Client

We do not assign placements at random. Our matching process is designed to find a pairing that works for both the carer and the client. A strong match leads to a better experience for everyone.

Here is how matching works at SW Care:

  • Your preferences matter. We ask about your interests, your experience, and the type of client you feel most comfortable supporting. Some carers prefer active clients who enjoy outings. Others thrive with quieter, companionship-focused placements.
  • Personality fit. We consider temperament, communication style, and shared interests. A client who loves cricket and gardening will be paired with a carer who enjoys those things too.
  • Location and logistics. For Cheltenham placements, we consider travel distance, parking, and local amenities near the client’s home.
  • Condition-specific matching. If a client has dementia, Parkinson’s, or complex physical needs, we match them with carers who have completed ongoing training and development in those areas.
  • Trial period. Every placement begins with a settling-in period. If the match does not feel right, we will re-assess and find a better fit. No pressure, no judgement.

We have placed over 100s of families since 2018. That experience means we get matching right the first time in most cases.

Support While You Are On Placement

Living in someone’s home is a unique working arrangement. We make sure you never feel isolated or unsupported while you are on placement in Cheltenham.

Your support network includes:

  • Named care manager. You have a dedicated manager who checks in with you regularly by phone or video call.
  • 24/7 on-call team. Day or night, there is always someone available if you need guidance, reassurance, or help with an unexpected situation.
  • Digital care app. You log notes, access care plans, and communicate with the office team in real time. Everything is documented and secure.
  • Regular placement reviews. We review every live-in placement at set intervals. We ask how you are feeling, whether you need anything, and whether the care plan needs adjusting.
  • Peer support. Our live-in carers stay connected through team messaging groups. You can share tips, ask questions, and support each other.
  • Wellbeing support. Our Employee Assistance Programme gives you free access to counselling, financial advice, and mental health resources. Caring for someone closely can be emotionally demanding, and we take that seriously.

We also visit you in person during placements. Our management team comes to the client’s home to check that you are comfortable, that the environment is safe, and that everything is working well.

> “I was nervous about being on my own in someone’s home. But the support is constant. My manager calls every week, I can reach the on-call team any time, and the app makes everything easy. I have never felt alone.” — Ruth, Live-In Carer, GL50

Career Changers and New Starters Welcome

You do not need a care background to become a live-in carer. Many of our strongest team members came from completely different careers. What they share is empathy, reliability, and a genuine desire to help.

Live-in care attracts people from all walks of life:

  • Former hospitality workers who are used to looking after people and working long shifts
  • Ex-military personnel who value structure, discipline, and service
  • Parents whose children have grown up, looking for meaningful work that uses their caring instincts
  • Teachers and teaching assistants who want a role with more personal connection
  • People between homes who want to save on living costs while doing something worthwhile

We provide every new live-in carer with a full two-week induction. That includes classroom training, shadow placements, and specialist modules on lone working and professional boundaries. You will feel ready before your first solo placement.

Your age, background, or previous career do not matter. What matters is your character. If you are kind, patient, and willing to learn, we will train you to do the rest.

Accommodation and Living Arrangements

Your comfort matters to us. Every live-in placement in Cheltenham provides a private room that is yours for the duration of your stay.

What your accommodation includes:

  • Your own bedroom. A private, furnished room with a bed, storage space, and a lock on the door. This is your space to relax and recharge.
  • Access to kitchen and bathroom. You share the client’s home, but your break time and evenings are your own.
  • Wi-Fi and utilities. Internet access and all household bills are covered at no cost to you during your placement.
  • Local amenities. Cheltenham placements are typically close to shops, parks, and public transport. We consider your needs when arranging accommodation.

During your two weeks off, you return to your own home or base. Some carers use their off-rota time to travel. Others spend it with family. The arrangement gives you genuine breathing space between placements.

We inspect every client home before placing a live-in carer. Your room must meet our standards for comfort, privacy, and safety. If it does not, we do not proceed with the placement until it does.

> “My room is lovely. It has everything I need, it is quiet, and I feel comfortable there. When I am off duty in the evening, I close the door and it is my own space. That boundary makes all the difference.” — Janet, Live-In Carer, GL53
